"Anjali Mondal - Crusading against destiny" Locked up in marriage which left her with no option but to face the tragic destiny - death. Anjali was pressurised by both village society and village panchayet to accept that hence determining her future. As her biography goes, she was married to a man named Sanatan Mondal residing in Baruipur, a village in West Bengal, more than ten years ago from now. He was extremely flirt and was openly involved with other women. Being a wife, Anjali had to bear and tolerate all this. But human minds are unpredictable. Whenever she protested, he used to beat her violently by bricks sometimes denying food and shelter. There have been days when he had locked her up for the whole day without any food or drink. Surprisingly, her in-laws had full consent on the injustice that was being done on her. History finds its treacherous impact when she was kicked by her husband while she was five months pregnant. Anjali tried to build her own life by taking training in Baruipur weaving center run by ISW but was forcefully stopped by her husband from going there. In September 21, 1996, her husband locked Anjali up in a room with her five-year old son, beat her up with bricks and sticks and went out to fetch Kerosene to set her ablaze. Anjali screamed for help but no helpful hands were extended. Somehow she managed to run away and after hiding for the whole night in the jungle she fled to her sister's house, the very next morning. ISW has taken up Anjali's case and lodged a diary at Baruipur P.S. It is helping her to overcome the mental trauma caused not only by the horrors she had undergone, but also the local society, which is putting the blame on Anjali for Leaving her husband against 'Indian Culture'. She now resides with her son whose responsibility is born solely by her. This picturises the immense determination which she has been able to gather by the little help that ISW provided her. Her achievement is really our success for it signifies her struggle denying which she had been able to stand her own feet. Overcoming the struggle and obstacle that blocks her way. She now understood the other brighter side of life being employed in the institute itself. |
